TRADITIONAL BUILDING MATERIALS
For reasons of aesthetics, comforts and eco-friendliness, local and traditional (natural) materials are favored in our constructions. However, it is sometimes useful and necessary to use some concrete in the house’s basic structure.
:: THE STRUCTURE
:: Concrete can be used for floor and ceiling slabs.
:: For wide rooms, concrete posts and beams are necessary elements of the structure.
:: THE SHELL
:: Stone walls, erected in keeping with ancestral methods. Morocco being a geologically varied country, different types of stone can be used;
:: The mortar is a careful dosage of lime, local earth and sand, sometimes mixed with a small amount of white or gray cement, to increase its solidity and longevity;
:: Wood beams support patterned reed or slat ceilings, wood for doors and windows. Several types of wood grow and can be found in Morocco. Others can be imported;
:: FINISHING
:: Wrought iron can be formed in any shape or style, from ornamental to sober contemporary. The local iron-workers happily experiment, as long as the client provides specific instructions and precise measurements.
:: Waterproof wall finish resembling a matte tadelakt can be very pleasant, while true tadelakt is recommended in the bathrooms.
:: The floors are generally finished with polished cement or dess, but can also be dressed with a wide variety of cement, bejmat or earthenware tiles.
As much as possible (stones, earth) is extracted from the land the house is built on, or from the area. This will keeps costs down and result in a house that is in harmony with the hues and textures of its environment.
